一般來說，連詞性質的連接詞連接兩個分句或引導一個從句，兩個分句或主從復合句之間用逗號連接。
副詞性質的連接詞不能象連詞一樣分句或主從復合句之間用逗號連接。也就是說它們不能連接兩個分句或引導從句。它們引導的句子與前面的句子之間要用分號或句號，而它們與引導的句子之間往往用逗號。副詞性質的連接詞在寫作中常常使用，主要分為以下幾類：
1.表示順序的，如first, in the first place, then, finally, in the end等等。尤其要注意then. 如：
誤：He graduated from college in 2003, then he found a job.
正：He graduated from college in 2003, and then he found a job.
He graduated from college in 2003. Then he found a job.
2.表示遞進關系的，如in addition, what is more, furthermore, moreover等。注意in addition與in addition to 的區別：in addition 是副詞性質;而in addition to 是介詞性質，后面必須接賓語。
3.表示轉折關系的，如 however, nevertheless, nonetheless, on the contrary, in contrast, 等等。要注意不要把however 當成連詞：
誤：In 2003, the United States launched the war on Iraq on account of Iraq possessingweapons of mass destruction (WMD), however, no WMD has been found in Iraq so far.
正：In 2003, the United States launched the war on Iraq on account of Iraq possessingweapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, no WMD has been found in Iraq so far.
In 2003, the United States launched the war on Iraq on account of Iraq possessingweapons of mass destruction (WMD). No WMD, however, has been found in Iraq so far.
4.表示結果的，如therefore, consequently, thus, hence, as a result等。尤其要注意therefore,thus等不是連詞以及hence的用法。如：
I am busy today, so can you come tomorrow?
I’ve never been to Spain. Therefore, I don’t know much about it.
The town was built on the side of the hill, hence the name Hillside.
5.舉例的，如for example, for instance, take…for example等。注意，for example, for instance是副詞性質，舉例說明時，前面要用句號;take…for example本身是一個句子結構。
He has been very helpful to me. For example, he would offer to lend me money whenever Iam in need.
6.表示條件的，意思為“否則，如or, otherwise等，注意它們不是連詞。
Put down your arms and put up your hands. Or/Otherwise I will shoot you. 放下武器，舉起手來，否則我就開槍。
當然，or 有時表示選擇(相當于either…or…省略了either)：
Put down your arms, or get killed. 要么放下武器，要么找死。
