Everyone knows that New York Citys World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists, but very few people know the story of how the twin towers first came to be.
The idea for the building came from millionaire（百萬富翁） banker David Rockefeller. Completed（完成） in 1973, the tower were said to mark the beginning of the information age. Since that time, the idea of the New York Trade Center has been copied the world over.
這座110層的大樓，被視為建筑是上的奇跡，各種安全措施及其完備，甚至不怕臺風地震的打擊。
They were believed to be able to survive anything short of a nuclear（原子核的） attack. While this symbol（象征） of power and money has fallen, the global economy it helped create continues.

如果你很喜歡看好萊塢影片，一定聽說過《星戰前傳Ⅱ：克隆人的進攻》這部片子，它的英文名稱就是：Star Wars Episode Ⅱ Attack of The Clones，attack通常指的就是充滿敵意，傷害很大的進攻、襲擊，911事件就是這樣一次恐怖襲擊。（Everyone knows that New York Citys World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists）
terror是名詞，可以指對某事恐怖，如：My elder sister has a terror of fire.（我姐姐怕火。）也可以指恐怖行動，參加恐怖行動的人就是terrorist（恐怖分子），恐怖主義就是terrorism.現在，911恐怖襲擊似乎成為了一個專有名詞，經常被人們這樣提起：September 11th terrorism attacks.
于此相對，了解雙子大樓（twin towers）歷史的人卻是寥寥無幾。（very few）few是形容詞，意思是很少數的;幾乎沒有的，修飾可數名詞，如：There were few people in the streets.（街上人很少。）在它前面加上a，就表示有幾個，如：He has a few friends in this city.他在這個城市里有幾個朋友。
任何事情都始于一個想法，這雙子大樓的主意就是美國著名的石油大亨David Rockefeller（大衛 洛克菲勒）想出來的，當時他除了石油，還有地產、銀行等許多產業，所以文中稱他為巨富銀行家。（millionaire banker）
建成于1973年的大樓，（Completed in 1973）被稱作（were said）信息時代的標志。（to mark the beginning of the information age）自從那時起，（Since that time）紐約世貿大樓的這種建筑模式（the idea of the New York Trade Center）就被全世界抄襲著。（has been copied the world over，可以理解成：has been copied over the world）比如，馬來西亞吉隆坡的雙塔形建筑，（電影《偷天陷阱》的外景地）就是其中之一。
在類似since that time或since then的情況下，since后面接一個時間的起點，since做介詞，表示自以來,從至今，從時間上看是一個從過去一直持續到現在的過程，所以，應該和現在完成時或過去完成時連用。如：I havent heard from him since last year.（我自去年以來未曾收到過他的信。）
下一段的they代指雙子大樓，人們相信他們可以在許多災難中幸免，（They were believed to be able to survive）除了核武襲擊。（anything short of a nuclear attack）然而，這座象征權利與金錢的大樓終于還是倒了，（While this symbol of power and money has fallen）它曾經協助創建的全球經濟（it helped create修飾the global economy）卻并沒有受此影響，還在繼續向前發展。（所以，一棟大樓并不能代表什么，經濟的發展靠的不是這些，而是踏踏實實的艱苦奮斗啊！）

Short of也可用于句首，表示除外，如：
Short of calling a meeting, they dont know how they can get their plan approved.（除非召開會議,否則他們真不知道他們的計劃怎么才能獲準。）

can和be able to的區別
表示能力這一意義時can和be able to基本相同, 但can只有兩個時態即現在時（can）與過去時（could）而be able to有多種形式。

試比較這兩個填空，第一句是將來時，顯然只能用be able to，第二句則兩個都可以用。
需要注意的是，對未來的能力做決定時, 一般用can如:
Were too busy today, but we can repair your can tomorrow.
